Christian legal historian and intermediary of Henric Schartau’s religious heritage : Carl Johan Schlyter (1795-1888)
Författare
Summary, in English
Carl Johan Schlyter was the first modern Swedish legal historian and served as a professor of legal history at Lund University from 1840 to 1876. Schlyter introduced Savigny’s historical school to Sweden, but his great scholarly contribution was his edition of the Swedish medieval laws, published in thirteen volumes from 1827 to 1877. He was also a deeply religious Christian. Schlyter and his teacher and mentor, professor Johan Holmbergson, admired the Lutheran vicar Henrik Schartau in Lund. Schartau gave all of his handwritten material to Holmbergson, his close friend, and after Schartau’s death, in 1825, Holmbergson and later Schlyter published Schartau’s sermons and theological works. Schlyter also wrote a Sunday catechism for his children, which he published in 1880. Schlyter was deeply involved in conflicts with representatives of liberal theology. He is an important example of the Scandinavian Christian jurists who devoted themselves to theological discourses in the nineteenth century-a period when conservative and liberal thought clashed over questions of religious freedom.
