Summary, in English

This book fills a gap in the literature of modern law and religion. The connection between law and religion is different in Scandinavia than in many other regions of Europe because of the lack of university-trained lawyers in the Nordic countries up to the eighteenth century. To arrive at a holistic picture of the relation among law, religion, the book covers the whole of Scandinavian legal history, from the first written legal sources that appear in the twelfth century to the present secular welfare states. It also presents this field of Scandinavian law in an international context. Thus the book presents Nordic intellectual history as manifested in current scholarly work in the relationship between law and religion. Most of the Nordic thinkers on Christian law were learned and had studied at a European university at some time, but most of them studied theology, not connecting it with legal studies, as happened in many other regions of Europe.
